Information about car rental CubaAlthough it is possible to rent a car in Cuba, most countries advise their citizens to avoid getting a Cuban rental car. This is primarily because, in the event of a serious fatal accident, those involved can be detained by the Cuban government for weeks or even months while an investigation is mounted. Furthermore, although traffic tends to be light and driving is done on the right-hand side, Cuban roads are only kept in so-so condition and sometimes present rough terrain or unexpected obstacles. Additionally, road signage across Cuba is unreliable at best. If you do decide to rent a car in Cuba, you will need a passport, your driver’s license from your home country and a CUC$200 deposit in cash. Most Cuban rental car companies stock newish (but not very well maintained) models of European and Asian cars, and reservations generally are not needed, as cars are in such short supply that it can be difficult to know if there will be a car available when you arrive. The best way to get around without a Cuba rental car is by private coach. Tourist buses are run by the bus company VÃazul and are modern and reliable. Though slightly showing their wear, these buses are far and away the easiest form of transport in Cuba, as they run on regular and reliable schedules to all of the areas on the island that are of interest to visitors. There are also trains in Cuba, but these are less reliable and comfortable than the VÃazul bus system. Similarly, Cuban taxis are reliable enough but you are likely to double or even triple your cost when taking a taxi versus a VÃazul coach to your destination.
